Chicken Bone Slim and the Biscuits were at Speakeasy last night. They do a lowdown blues, playing tunes from Chicago and Texas. Usually you can find them on Tuesdays (6-9p) at Smitty’s (where they have a food truck roundup) on Adams Avenue and 34th.
Chicken Bone Slim was singing the cover song Early in the Morning, with Dane Terry on harp, Bruce Stewart on drums and Mike Chiricuzio on bass in this video.
Last night Missy Andersen brought her soulful R&B to Jimmy Loves and got people dancing with this Al Green cover song Love and Happiness.
Missy Andersen is back at Jimmy Love’s this Sunday 7-11pm, so if you missed her Friday you can hear her soulful R&B tomorrow night. She won’t be back again until the 28th of this month.
There is a lot of blues downtown this week. In addition to what is on the calendar above, there is also the Wednesday night jam at the House of Blues that starts at 7pm.
Also at the HOB on the free stage is a BLUSD (our local blues organization – see www.blusd.org for more info) appreciation party that will feature 4 blues bands. That will be happening Sunday 12/8 from 1-5pm. It is free to members and $15 for non-members, but you can apply that to a membership to support our local blues scene.
Two of our wonderful female blues bands will be playing at December Nights in Balboa Park this coming Saturday 12/7. Michele Lundeen’s band will be kicking off at noon, and Mercedes Moore’s band starts at 10pm.

If you planned to catch Annette DaDomb singing the blues tonight at Hennessey’s, there is a change on the calendar. She starts at 4pm, not 7pm as I had it listed. This is an open event as she celebrates her completion of a Masters degree. Come hear this beautiful lady and her band belt out some great blues.
Tacos Deluxe isn’t exactly a band, but a group of musicians who play together. You just don’t know which musicians in the group will show up or what songs they will play, since they don’t have a set list. Last night at the SpeakEasy, the group changed several times as musicians from the group came and went, and as other musicians showed up.

By the way, Red Lotus Review band was on the calendar for the SpeakEasy, not Tacos Deluxe. I learned that these groups will sometimes switch up, so it could be either one when it is booked as Red Lotus Review.
Bill Magee is a southern bluesman, and you can hear his Mississippi and Louisiana roots in his songs. He’s got that great blues voice!
The weekly blues jam at House of Blues went an extra hour last night and ended a great evening with Lafayette Falkquay (who is part of the weekly house jam band) and Fuzzy Rankins, who showed up to play. They teamed up and had some fun wrapping up the evening! Also on stage was Michael Minor on drums, Packy B on rhythm guitar and David Falkquay on bass.
I also want to mention the awesome host MC of the JammingOut BLUSD jam each week: Rosalea Schiavone, who organizes who goes up on stage and ensures everyone has a good time!
A group of teenagers, who have their own bands, joined together and rocked the house for almost 40 minutes last night, and they can really play the blues.
On guitar are Leilani Kilgore and Tyler Ray Davidson (who is singing), on bass is Randon Davitt, and on drums Matt Fyke. These kids also come and jam at the SpeakEasy the first Saturday of the month in the afternoon – although in December they will be playing on the 14th. I will keep you posted with the calendar updates.
Lafayette was playing his usual Tuesday night gig at the SpeakEasy with Ronnie Baumslater on bass and Chris Terrell on drums. I’m afraid its pretty dark to really see this video (and that’s what makes the SpeakEasy such a great blues joint), but you can hear them and get a taste of Lafayette’s sound.
I got in from the cold northeast and headed over to Patrick’s last night. There was a good crowd and a lot of folks jammin up on stage. Here’s a clip of Jacob Levy singing (with a full stage of musicians with him – too many to mention).
If you enjoy hearing the sax, Walter’s Jam is a good place to go. If Walter isn’t playing himself (and often he is), other sax (and trumpet) players often show up.
