Mix of Blues & Reggae Jam at HOB

Wednesdays are one of my favorite blues nights of the week and usually starts at the JammingOut (www.JammingOut.net) and BLUSD (www.blusd.org) blues jams on the free stage at House of Blues. Last night was a full house of musicians who got up to play throughout the evening and an audience of locals and visitors.

Christine Gilardi took the lead and rocked the house singing and playing guitar to the great Etta James cover song The Sky is Crying in this video.  She is accompanied by Neil Jones on lead guitar, Junya Isogawa on guitar, Kevin Cooper on bass and Rene Wooley on drums.

We don’t hear reggae too often at this jam, but Rosalie Thomas showed up with her steel drums and delighted us with the UB40 cover song I Want to Make You Sweat.  Also on stage was Michael Minor on drums, Kevin Cooper on bass (and vocals) and Ray Zvetina on guitar.

Another Good Jam Night at HOB

I got to the jam late and heard that I’d missed some incredible blues singers, who had just gotten off the stage.  That happens at this jam, where talented musicians and singers often show up and if you aren’t there to catch them….

But I wasn’t disappointed for long.  Rich Giglio, a local San Diego guitarist and vocalist, went up with Ron Ordon on bass guitar, Jaz Jaszewski on guitar and Kevin Cooper (who usually plays bass) on drums.  Here they are doing a Stevie Ray Vaughn cover song, Flood Down in Texas.

Another Good Jam Night at HOB

The JammingOut/BLUSD jam on Wednesday nights brings in new faces every week, and last night was no exception.  Bryan Whelan (on guitar) and Mellie Frances (vocals) showed up and they performed cover song, Thrill is Gone, with Irakli Aladash on bass and Steve Douglas on drums.

Jammin Out on Wednesday Night’s

Every Wednesday night on the free stage at House of Blues is a good blues jam, hosted by JammingOut.net and BLUSD.  Last night ended with members of the house band back up on stage doing the cover song Woke Up This Morning (Kevin Cooper on bass guitar, Lafayette Falkquay on lead guitar and Packy B on rhythm guitar) along with John Rokas on drums, who was visiting from Cleveland, OH.

Good Blues on Wednesdays at HOB

What a great night at House of Blues on the Voodoo Stage!  A number of musicians who happened to be in San Diego showed up to play, and the organizers for JammingOut Wednesdays  (Rosalea Schiavone, Doyle Thomas and Kevin Cooper) did a great job getting them all up to play.

In this video, LaMonte DeMille who has been playing the past year in Europe and just got back into town was on lead guitar and vocals, supported by Irakli Aladash on bass, Tony Garrick on drums and Brad Hanson on harmonica, who was visiting from Washington state.  We are going to see a lot more of LaMonte around town when he settles back into the area this Spring – check out his UTube videos at demac520.

At the end of the evening, a newcomer to the jam, Greg Dones got up to play bass and sang the cover song The Blues is Alright.  With him was Brad Hanson on harp, Packy B on guitar, and I didn’t catch who was on drums.  It was a fabulous ending to the jam.

The Saxations at HOB Jam

The JammingOut BLUSD jam at House of Blues was hopping last night, and as usual there were lots of local musicians who showed up to jam.  You never know who will be there, and last night was a real treat to have two members of The Saxations quartet in the house.  Playing the sax were Leilani Vidal and Michelle Maynard, who joined Doyle Thomas on guitar and vocals, Chris Cooper on keyboard, Irakli Aladash on bass, and Michael Minor on drums to perform cover song Unchain My Heart.

HOB Jam – Lafayette & Fuzzy Rankins Wrap it Up

The weekly blues jam at House of Blues went an extra hour last night and ended a great evening with Lafayette Falkquay (who is part of the weekly house jam band) and Fuzzy Rankins, who showed up to play.  They teamed up and had some fun wrapping up the evening!  Also on stage was Michael Minor on drums, Packy B on rhythm guitar and David Falkquay on bass.

I also want to mention the awesome host MC of the JammingOut BLUSD jam each week: Rosalea Schiavone, who organizes who goes up on stage and ensures everyone has a good time!

HOB Jam – Open Mike Night

You never know who is going to show up at the Wednesday night House of Blues jam.  Tonight we’ve got Ronnie Baumslater, usually on bass, playing the lead guitar and doing vocals.  With him are Kevin Cooper on bass, John Brooks on sax, and Bob Luke, visiting from Texas, playing the drums.
