Wednesday Jam Highlights at HOB

If you love blues, the Wednesday night jam at HOB downtown, hosted by JammingOut.net, the local blues society (BLUSD) and House of Blues, is one of the great jams around town.

Here we have Justin Fools on harmonica and singing cover song No Particular Place to Go, supported by Dave Keefer and Judd Austin on guitar, Dale Davis on bass and Lisa Viegas.

The evening ended with a little fun on stage as Lafayette Falkquay sings cover song Mustang Sally, along with Junya Isogawa and Rich Giglio on guitar, Kevin Cooper on bass and Billy Wear on drums.

San Diego Blues

San Diego Blues Calendar: April 7th-13th

Blues Calendar - Apr 7There is a lot of blues happening in the greater downtown area this week, and there is a bit more than usual out on Shelter Island (Kona Kai and Humphrey’s Backstage) and at Tio Leo’s off of Morena Blvd.

Morry Sochat & the Special 20s is a Chicago blues & swing band out on tour, and they are coming to San Diego on Friday to play at the Gaslamp SpeakEasy.  They should be a lot of fun, especially if you are a swing dancer. Unfortunately I’ll miss them.

I head out of town Friday for 10 days, but I hope to catch many of these bands and get up some more video before I go.  If you get any good video of these bands in the next couple weeks, please email me with the YouTube link and I’ll get it up on the site.

Jammin at HOB Wed Night Jam

There was a good mix of musicians at the weekly blues jam at House of Blues again this week.  I got there a bit late, and missed a lot of it.  But I did catch Tony Garrick singing Freddie King’s cover song I’m Tore Down (and playing the drums) along with Dale Davis on bass, Nicholas Butterfield on guitar and Junya Isogawa on guitar (who you see first in this video).  Enjoy as I did!

San Diego Blues Calendar: Mar 31st – Apr 6th

Blues Calendar - Mar 31It looks like Kona Kai will be open for two more weeks before they close for remodeling, and this week Backwater Blues Band will be playing there on Wednesday evening.

There is also a tribute to Muddy Waters by the 145th Street local blues band at 98 Bottles on Saturday, which should be lots of fun.

And of course, there are jams Monday – Thursday around town and blues playing most nights at Patrick’s and the SpeakEasy in the Gaslamp.

Higher Ground at Patrick’s

Christine Gilardi and her newly formed band brought a mix of blues and soul to Patrick’s Thursday night.  Here is a clip of Christine singing Stevie Wonder’s cover song Higher Ground, along with James Ferguson on keyboard, David Lindgren on bass, Rene Woolley on drums, and Walter Gentry on sax.

Cajun Zydeco Fun at Humphrey’s

If you are having a hard day, as I was yesterday, zydeco music can really lift your spirits.  So I went to Humphrey’s Backstage last night to hear the Bayou Brothers – one of the few Cajun and blues bands in San Diego, and it got me up dancing along with everyone else.  Check them out the next time they play at Tio Leo’s on a zydeco Tuesday or they are back at Humphrey’s!

San Diego Blues Calendar: Mar 24th – 30th

Blues Calendar - Mar 24There is always some good blues around the downtown area, and this week is no exception. I’m hoping to get to a couple of jams, check out Christine Gilardi’s new show at Patrick’s on Thursday, and go see Lil A & The Allnighters at Tio Leo’s.  See you out there!

San Diego Blues Calendar: Mar 17th – 23rd

Blues Calendar - Mar 17This is a pretty typical week for the blues downtown.  Jams are on Monday-Thursday night around town, and the blues band regulars are playing at the SpeakEasy, Patrick’s, Tio Leo’s and at both Humphrey’s and Kona Kai on Shelter Island.

There is also the Youth Blues Jam on Saturday afternoon at the SpeakEasy, which is always amazing.  All kids under 21 who play blues, and there are more than you might think, are invited to the monthly open jam.  I’ve seen kids as young as 9, who are incredible.  Don’t miss it, if you are in the Gaslamp that day.  See you there!

San Diego Blues Calendar: Mar 10 – 16

Blues Calendar - Mar 10If you want to hear blues this week, the best days are during the week Monday – Thursday, and there are jams on each of those nights too.

Thursday night at House of Blues from 7-11pm, Kevin Cooper will be playing on bass with the Sully Sullivan band.  They aren’t exactly blues – more rock with some R&B, but they are still great and there is an open bar for the first 1000 drinks!!

It is a very light week for Shelter Island, with no blues on the weekend at either Humphrey’s or Kona Kai.  Still no word on when Kona Kai will shut down for renovations, but I believe it is still planned for this Spring sometime.

San Diego Blues Calendar: Mar 3 – 9

Blues Calendar - Mar 3It’s Mardi Gras in the gaslamp!, and Annette DaBomb & her Bomb Squad will be playing at the House of Blues Tuesday night as part of the festivities.

There is plenty of other live blues around town this week, so I hope to see you out there!!   And please don’t forget to tip our hard-working musicians.
