Stoney B Blues Summit Rocked the House – Michele Lundeen & Annette DaBomb

Two of my favorite soulful blues singers in San Diego were at the Stoney B Summit last Sunday night, and they were fantastic.

Michele isn’t called the Queen of Steam for nothing.  Here she is singing one of her original songs, Song Inside Me (title of her CD – great CD!, which you can get link to it on my Tunes page).  She’s singing with Charles Burton on guitar (who also performed on her CD), Ric Lee on drums, John Simons on bass and special guest Irv Goldstein on the organ.

In this video Michele is singing another one of her originals, also on that same CD, called Blues is a Feeling.  Great song.

Here is Annette DaBomb singing cover song Got My Mojo Working, with Andres Acuna on guitar, Doc Holiday on keyboards, Bob Prater on bass, Tony Peterson on drums, and Zach Cole harmonica.

Stoney B Blues Summit Rocked the House – Stoney B & Phil Diiorio

I didn’t catch Stoney B when he had his own band on the stage during his annual blues summit Sunday, but here he is playing guitar with Phil Diiorio, who is singing I Will Never Take You Back. They are performing along with Irv Goldstein on keyboards, Chuck Arcilla on sax, Bob Prater on bass and Paul Carlomango on drums.

Saturday Blues at Hennesseys & SpeakEasy

For those that don’t know, the Gaslamp SpeakEasy is owned by Hennessey’s Tavern right next door, and both venues have live music.  The last Saturday of every month, talented kids under 21 play blues at Hennessey’s from 2-5pm.

Here is a video of Leilani Kilgore (youth blues ambassador for BLUSD – our San Diego blues society) performing that great Jimi Hendrix cover song Red House, along with Malachi Johnson on bass (who usually plays drums) and Orion Lewis on drums.

Later that night I caught Stoney B Blues band on the SpeakEasy side.  Stoney is singing a BB King cover song, Why I Sing the Blues, with his band members, Bob Prater on bass, Pat Kelley on keyboard and Paul Carlomango on drums.  It is always dark in the SpeakEasy, but the video is pretty good considering the lighting.

Huge Turnout at Gator By The Bay

If you haven’t been to the annual Gator by the Bay, add it to your list next year.  It is a 3-day festival at Spanish Landing Park (across from the airport) with 5 stages of non-stop bands, mostly zydeco but also blues, boogie and some jazz.

This was my first year, and I was impressed by how well the event is organized, the good selection of booth fair, the bands and all the shade options!!  I’m always hoping for enough shade at these outdoor events!

Here’s a good video of Annette DaBomb with the Lance Dieckmann Band (Lance on harmonica, Phil Diiorio on guitar, Bob Prater on bass and Becky Russell on drums) performing the Ray Charles cover song, Night Time is the Right Time.  Sadly the video got cut off before they finished the song, but Enjoy the 3 1/2 minutes we did get.  They sounded great on this stage.

Guitar Jam at SpeakEasy

There were a number of guitar players who showed up at the SpeakEasy blues jam Monday, and in this video they all jammed and did solos.  From left to right, Jon Fai, Patrick Jarrell, Brandon Cerquedo and Fuzzy Rankins.  Bob Prater was on bass and Bruce Hutcherson on drums.

Jammin Monday at SpeakEasy

I was away most of last week and missed catching the blues around town, so I hope to catch more of the bands and jams this week.  Last night I stopped in at the Gaslamp SpeakEasy Monday night jam for the second set, and I got to hear these musicians jammin together with Fuzzy Rankins.  It was a great set and this video is of their last song before the break.

On guitars with Fuzzy were Patrick Jerrell and Jon Fai (furthest to his right), Karl Bradley on drums (who did a solo in this video), Bob Prater on bass guitar, and behind Jon (where its hard to see him) was Justin Fools on harmonica.

John January Joins Monday Jam Night

Last night John January showed up at the SpeakEasy blues jam, and played the lead guitar and sang, along with Patrick Jerrell on rhythm guitar, Irakli Aladash on bass, Christine Gilardi on vocals and Karl Bradley on drums.

Not sure how to get the red-eye out of this iphone video.  Couldn’t do it with my editing software.  Anyone have a way to do this or to avoid it in the first place?

Later in the 3rd set, Fuzzy Rankins, who hosts the jam, finished up the night playing his cover song Down Home Blues, along with his drummer Bruce Hutcherson, and Bob Prater on bass, Patrick Jarrell on rhythm guitar, Justin Fools on harmonica, and a keyboardist I didn’t know.

The place was packed most of the night, so word is getting out how good this jam is!  See you there next Monday.

Funky Blues Jam at SpeakEasy

Fuzzy Rankins hosts the Old School Blues Jam, and he amps it up and gets down with his funky blues.  Last night a number of people dropped in to play with him.  Joining Fuzzy in this clip is a young guy on guitar, calling himself Rambo (not wanting to give me his real name – I get that), Irakli Aladash on bass, and TC Tye on keyboards – along with his drummer, Bruce Hutcherson.

Later in the evening, Matt Meyer joined in on sax with Fuzzy to play the cover song So Sorry Baby, and Bob Prater took over on bass.  Enjoy, as I did.

Lance Dieckmann Band at Jimmy Love’s

It was a slow Sunday night around the Gaslamp, but Lance Dieckmann and Phil Diiorio with their band had a good groove going at Jimmy Love’s.  If you haven’t heard Lance play the harmonica or heard him sing, you are in for a treat with this video.  He’s one of the best harp players in the area and has a powerful voice.

In this next video I took, Phil Diiorio is singing one of my favorite Robert Cray cover songs, Right Next Door, with Lance on harp, Bob Prater on bass and Becky Russell on drums.  The stage lighting at Jimmy Love’s shines a red light where Phil is standing, which I wish they would change – its a distraction even when you are there, and I can’t edit it out.  Urg…

Old School Blues Jam at SpeakEasy got Jammin!!

I also stopped in at the Old School Blues Jam at the SpeakEasy, which is hosted on Monday nights by Fuzzy Rankins.  He had his house bass player, Bob Prater, and his drummer, Bruce Hutherson, there as he usually does at the jam.  And last night, Patrick Jarrell came in with his guitar to play with the guys.  There was also a sax player I’ve seen before who joined in, but I didn’t get his name.
