Old School Blues Jam at SpeakEasy got Jammin!!
I also stopped in at the Old School Blues Jam at the SpeakEasy, which is hosted on Monday nights by Fuzzy Rankins. He had his house bass player, Bob Prater, and his drummer, Bruce Hutherson, there as he usually does at the jam. And last night, Patrick Jarrell came in with his guitar to play with the guys. There was also a sax player I’ve seen before who joined in, but I didn’t get his name.
Walter Gentry and the G-Men’s R&B
Local sax player, Walter Gentry and his G-Men band play Rhythm & Blues, Soul and little bit of rock on Monday nights at Patrick’s Gaslamp Pub. I was there last night catching them perform the cover song so many of us know: Superstition.
Francious Simms has a great voice for this song, and he’s supported by Johnny Vernazza on guitar, Walter on sax (hard to see him with the lighting), Larry Morgan on bass (also a bit too dark to really see) and Leon Wesley on drums.
Blues Lovers United of San Diego (BLUSD) party
If you missed the BLUSD party at the House of Blues this past Sunday, here is a video taken of the Bayou Brothers with Lance Dieckmann playing the harmonica. The Bayou Brothers brings to San Diego their Cajun, Zydeco, blues sound from Louisianna, compete with rubboards!
We also got to hear the 44s with James Harman, Ben Powell and one of our local blues youth groups.
BLUSD is a non-profit local organization dedicated to keeping the blues alive in San Diego. They have a weekly calendar for the entire county, so check them out at www.blusd.org, and for just $25 become a member.
San Diego Blues Calendar: Dec 9-15
We have another full week of blues coming up around the downtown area. Friday is a bit light, but the rest of the week there are lots of bands and jams to check out.
Note that Fuzzy Rankins will be playing at Croces on Thursday, not on Wednesday when his band usually plays there. This is his last performance before Croce’s moves out of the Gaslamp and heads to Banker’s Hill, so if you haven’t heard him play before, don’t miss him this week. He’s one of the best true blues guitarists in the area.
There is also the Wednesday night jam at House of Blues from 7-11pm, which isn’t on the calendar since they don’t offer the $1 off first drink.
Chicken Bone Slim comes to the Gaslamp
Chicken Bone Slim and the Biscuits were at Speakeasy last night. They do a lowdown blues, playing tunes from Chicago and Texas. Usually you can find them on Tuesdays (6-9p) at Smitty’s (where they have a food truck roundup) on Adams Avenue and 34th.
Chicken Bone Slim was singing the cover song Early in the Morning, with Dane Terry on harp, Bruce Stewart on drums and Mike Chiricuzio on bass in this video.
Missy Andersen at Jimmy Love’s
Last night Missy Andersen brought her soulful R&B to Jimmy Loves and got people dancing with this Al Green cover song Love and Happiness.
Missy Andersen is back at Jimmy Love’s this Sunday 7-11pm, so if you missed her Friday you can hear her soulful R&B tomorrow night. She won’t be back again until the 28th of this month.
San Diego Blues Calendar: Dec 2nd – 8th
There is a lot of blues downtown this week. In addition to what is on the calendar above, there is also the Wednesday night jam at the House of Blues that starts at 7pm.
Also at the HOB on the free stage is a BLUSD (our local blues organization – see www.blusd.org for more info) appreciation party that will feature 4 blues bands. That will be happening Sunday 12/8 from 1-5pm. It is free to members and $15 for non-members, but you can apply that to a membership to support our local blues scene.
Two of our wonderful female blues bands will be playing at December Nights in Balboa Park this coming Saturday 12/7. Michele Lundeen’s band will be kicking off at noon, and Mercedes Moore’s band starts at 10pm.

Tacos Deluxe at SpeakEasy
Tacos Deluxe isn’t exactly a band, but a group of musicians who play together. You just don’t know which musicians in the group will show up or what songs they will play, since they don’t have a set list. Last night at the SpeakEasy, the group changed several times as musicians from the group came and went, and as other musicians showed up.
Here is a clip (a bit dark because it is the SpeakEasy) with Bubba McCoy on harp, Pete Fazzini on guitar, Kurt Kalker on drums, and Tracy Webeck on bass.
By the way, Red Lotus Review band was on the calendar for the SpeakEasy, not Tacos Deluxe. I learned that these groups will sometimes switch up, so it could be either one when it is booked as Red Lotus Review.
Bill Magee Blues Band at Patrick’s
Bill Magee is a southern bluesman, and you can hear his Mississippi and Louisiana roots in his songs. He’s got that great blues voice!
