It will be a lite week for blues around downtown this week. No blues at Kona Kai, Magnolia or Croce’s.
Croce’s will be moving to Bankers Hill in the next couple of weeks, and they will reopen as Croce’s Park West up on 5th and Nutmeg. From what I hear, they will keep both Fuzzy Rankins and Lady Dottie on their schedule. I will know more about that soon.

For those of you staying local, there is plenty of live blues music around the downtown area this coming week to enjoy, even on Christmas Eve and the night of Christmas.
Kona Kai has a nice brunch on Sundays (perfect for a holiday weekend), and this week Whitney Shay, who does a mix of sultry jazz and soulful blues, will be the featured performer.
We have another full week of live music around the downtown area. There are jams on Monday (at SpeakEasy), Tuesday (at Patrick’s), Wednesday (at House of Blues 7-11p that isn’t on the calendar since they don’t offer $1 discount) and Thursday (at Spaghetteria).
Also this Friday at House of Blues is a special holiday event. CeeCee James and Michele Lundeen will be playing on the free house stage (7-11p). There is no cover. All they ask is that you bring a toy for Toys for Tots. Michele will also be in the Gaslamp SpeakEasy on Saturday, which is a treat for all of us who love her raw blues voice.
Please tip the bands. There is no cover at most of the venues, so tips matter! Thanks.
We have another full week of blues coming up around the downtown area. Friday is a bit light, but the rest of the week there are lots of bands and jams to check out.
Note that Fuzzy Rankins will be playing at Croces on Thursday, not on Wednesday when his band usually plays there. This is his last performance before Croce’s moves out of the Gaslamp and heads to Banker’s Hill, so if you haven’t heard him play before, don’t miss him this week. He’s one of the best true blues guitarists in the area.
There is also the Wednesday night jam at House of Blues from 7-11pm, which isn’t on the calendar since they don’t offer the $1 off first drink.
There is a lot of blues downtown this week. In addition to what is on the calendar above, there is also the Wednesday night jam at the House of Blues that starts at 7pm.
Also at the HOB on the free stage is a BLUSD (our local blues organization – see www.blusd.org for more info) appreciation party that will feature 4 blues bands. That will be happening Sunday 12/8 from 1-5pm. It is free to members and $15 for non-members, but you can apply that to a membership to support our local blues scene.
Two of our wonderful female blues bands will be playing at December Nights in Balboa Park this coming Saturday 12/7. Michele Lundeen’s band will be kicking off at noon, and Mercedes Moore’s band starts at 10pm.

This is an unusual week; there isn’t any blues happening on Saturday downtown. What Taryn Donath does is more jazz and a mix of other things with a bit of blues thrown in. But there is plenty of great blues the rest of the week all over town.
